Annual Water Report
Year 2001
Apex #2 Mine
Permit C-81-011
Report by Greg Lewicki, P.E.
Surface Water
R~~-,, , TD
F ~~ 2 ; ~G02
D1V stun of ~,~ine;als and GeelOgY
As in previous years, the single sediment pond for the entire disturbed area did not
discharge; it only contained water in the spring as a result of snowmelt. All disturbed
area is channeled into the sediment pond except for a small exemption area of less than
0.1 acre located at the reclaimed office area. The sediment pond discharge is permitted
with the Colorado Department of Health as NPDES Permit #COG-850041. (The permit
was formerly CO-0036668). Quarterly DMR forms are attached for the year. Quarterly
sediment pond inspections revealed no problems with functionality of the pond. These
inspections are attached.
Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard area, was
tested quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. The sample
location was moved to immediately downstream of the reclaimed area. The data for
2001 data in Trout Creek showed normal conditions, with normal flows in Trout Creek.
The water has historically been of good quality and compares favorably to the baseline
analysis included in the permit. Iron, zinc and arsenic are in low concentration. The
summer levels show relative drought conditions. Ph levels are always good (7.8-82)
and total dissolved solids of the stream is 170 ppm. There are no signs of water quality
changes from previous years.
All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The
mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic
balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road
requites cleaning as does the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek
Road.
Ground Water
In 1997 a revision was submitted to install two new shallow groundwater monitoring
wells upstream and downstream of the mine reclaimed area. These wells were installed
in 1997 and replaced the old upstream and downstream wells. This was done since the
downstream welt and surface water monitoring points were near the P&M Edna mine
and were recording fluctuating data. The ls` water sampling of both wells in 1998
demonstrated normal water quality.
