considered a calcium sulfate/bicarbonate type with a more stable ionic condition
than the surface waters of the creek. Trace metal concentrations of arsenic,
cadmium, lead, mercury and selenium were at or below detection limits while
aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc were present in acceptable quantities.
Extreme levels of these latter four parameters were detected at Station W-1 in
October. A possible reason for those levels may be that the sample was
contaminated by sediments in the bottom of the well as only a small quantity of
water was available.
The well at station W-7 is a domestic water supply at a residence above
the mine site. During the year no access to the well could be obtained.
Deep wells were sampled at stations W-6, W-9, W-iD, W-17 and W-18.
The general water level fluctuation cycle of these wells was an increase in level
from January through June, a decrease from July through October and a slight
increase in November and December (Appendix 2). Stations W-6 and W-18
exhibited the greatest fluctuations ranging nearly 16 and 18 feet, respectively
(Table 1). Water quality of the deep wells was similar to that of the surface and
alluvial waters. The waters were a calcium sulfate/bicarbonate type, however ,
exhibited higher concentrations of iron, manganese, zinc and ammonia.
Chemical parameters were relatively stable over the year with greater
ionization as water levels were lower. Some of the parameters such as iron and
ammonia exhibited high concentrations during certain sampling events. Reasons
for these spikes are not known. Conductivity and TDS of well W-17 were also
higher than other wells.
Station W-16 is located in the reclaimed area. Water level remained
relatively stable over the monitoring period ranging from 93 1/8" in July to 96.8 in
January. Water quality was consistent with other wells sampled with somewhat
higher concentrations of iron and manganese.
9
