Environmentni Plururers. Scientists urrd Engineers
RECEIVED
January 22, 1998
i JAN 27 1999'
Mr. Jim Btnnell ~
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology Oiviston o1 MinerdlS 8G80109Y
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street i
Denver, CO 80203-22 I3
RE: Annual Reclamation Report for 1997, Canadian Strip Mine, Permit C-81-026
Dear Mr. Burnell:
Slurco Corporation hereby submits [Iris 1997 annual reclamation report for the above referenced mine. The
permit area is located on 155 acres of private and federal land. Mine disturbance including the pits, facilities
areas and sediment control structures disturbed approximately 81 acres. Areas 1, B, and 111 of Pit 1 were
reclaimed in 1979, 1980; and 1981, respectively, which totaled 22.9 acres. Area 1V which included Pit 2 was
reclaimed in 1987 and totaled 57.2 acres. The associated sediment control structures including the pond 3 area
were reclaimed in 19911 Ponds I and 2 have been retained as permanent impoundments.
The only reclamation activities conducted during the year were associated with a second repair of rill and gully
erosion caused by snowmelt in 1996 (see attached map). Broadcast interseeding and raking was completed
following repair and shave matting was anchored in place to aid in plant growth. The Pond 2 embankment was
also interseeded to improve vegetative cover. Areas seeded are displayed on the attached map and accounted
for approximately 1 acre. Seed mix and rate applied were consistent with those approved in the permit.
i
On June l7 and August ~14/I5, 1997, a thistle spraying program was conducted. This program was approved
by MR-Ob of the permit. A 3 percent solution of Hi-Dep (a 2-4-dichJorohpenoxyacetic acid compound) was
sprayed with a hand sprayer directly on thistle plants encountered throughout the site (see attached map).
Subsequent site visits indicated that this treatrnent was successful in killing plants which were sprayed.
Should you have questions or if you need additional information concerning these reclamation activities.
please do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely, '
~oi 4~.~
Jerry H.
