West Elk Mine 2002 Annual Hydrology Report
• WEST ELK MINE
2002 ANNUAL HYDROLOGY REPORT
MOUNTAIN COAL COMPANY, LLC
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The 2002 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) details Mountain Coal Company's (MCC) hydrologic
monitoring activities at the West Elk Mine (Project) for the Water Year 2002 (WY2002). The
report summarizes the monitoring information and presents an analysis of the data with respect to
mining operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology (CDMG).
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
In WY2002, mining was completed in longwall panels 14 and 15 and mining was advanced up to
crosscut 36 in longwall panel 16. Development mining continued in longwall panels 17 and 22
• (see Map 1).
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF 2002 WATER YEAR
During the Water Year 2002, October 2001 through September 2002 (WY2002), precipitation and
snowfall were below average, resulting in reduced stream flows in Western Colorado.
2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the project area for WY2002 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations (Colorado Climate Center, 2003 and NRCS, 2003). Figures la,b, and c show WY2002
monthly average precipitation data compared to 30-year historical averages for Paonia, Overland
Reservoir and McClure Pass. The annual precipitation was 64%, 66% and 74% of the 30-year
historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir and McClure Pass, respectively.
I~
Project #00301 HydroGeo, Inc.
