EASTSIDE MINE
Summary of 2000 Water Monitoring
Extent ofMinine
No mining has occurred at the Eastside Mine since December 1994. The buildings and surface facilities
were removed from the minesite, the portals were sealed and surface area was regraded in May, June and
July of 1995. Eastside Coal Company requested and was granted a Phase I Bond Release in December
of 1995. In September of 1995 the disturbed area was seeded with the approved seed mixture as listed
in the approved Mining and Reclamation Permit. The azea is inspected on a quarterly basis to ensure the
stormwater management plan and sediment control system aze functioning properly. The sediment
control system was removed and reclauned in December 2001. The area regraded was seeded in October
2002.
Flow and Field Parameters
The flow and field parameters of the Harvey Gap Outlet above and below the mine continue to
demonstrate the seasonal discharges from the Harvey Gap Reservoir. The Above Mine pH ranged from
6.5 to 7.5. The Above Mine conductivity ranged from 490 to 750 microohms/cm. Above Mine
Temperature ranged from 4.3 to 20.6 degrees centigrade. The Below Mine pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.5.
Below Mine conductivity ranged from 516 to 905 microohms/cm Below Mine temperature ranged from
3.4 to 20.4 degrees centigrade. The Seep pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.5. Seep conductivity ranged from 869
to 1079 microohms/cm. Seep temperature ranged from 3.7 to 18.4 degrees centigrade. No significant
deviations from the 1996-2001 field data were noted.
Chemical Pazameters
The chemical parameter results of the Harvey Gap Outlet above the mine and below the mine generally
fall within the ranges established 1985-2001. The averages of all the samples taken indicate that
Conductivity is higher than previous years. The average value of the Dissolved Calcium decreased
slightly, and alkalinity is slightly lower in the Above Mine and Below Mine Samples, and sligtly higher
in the Seep samples.
There was no water discharged from the four inch steel pipe installed in the portal seal from the Eastside
Mine.
Impacts on Surface and Ground Water
No discharge has occurred from sediment pond SP-1 or from the underground mine workings.
The water monitoring data are listed on the attached tables found is the Data and Statistical Information
section beginning on page 5 to and including page 10. A comparison of 2002 data with 1996-2001 data
indicates no measurable impacts on ground or surface water have occurred due to mining or reclamation
Page 3 of 22
