SURFACE WATER MONITORING <br />' Quarterly surface water samples for flow and water quality <br />were taken during May, June, August and October. <br />METHODS <br />' During quarterly visits, flow measurements were made using a <br />Teledyne-Gurley Model 622 current meter. Measurements were made <br />by stretching a 100 foot tape across a surveyed cross section of <br />t the creek and utilizing the USGS six-tenths depth method. During <br />high flow periods when the stream cannot be waded, the culvert <br />width and water depth are measured. Velocity is then estimated by <br />timing objects over a known distance. In the office, cross <br />sections were drawn to assess changes in stream bed configuration <br />and flows were calculated. <br />' During samplings for water quality, measurements for <br />temperature, pH and conductivity were made utilizing an Orion <br />Research Model 399A portable pH meter and Hack Model 16300 <br />portable conductivity meter. Prior to field sampling, meters were <br />' calibrated with known standards. All other parameters were <br />collected in precharged bottles and submitted to Chemtech <br />Laboratory in Salt Lake City for analyses. Methods of analyses <br />' were consistent with EPA standard testing procedures. <br />' RESULTS <br />Results of all surface water flows and field parameters made <br />' during 1986 and 1987 are contained in Table 1. A summary of <br />chemical parameters is presented in Appendix 1. Graphs of major <br />chemical parameters are also included in Appendix 1. <br />' Flow data collected on Hubbard Creek (Station H-1) indicates <br />a high flow of 192 cfs during the month of May. This flow was the <br />result of snow melt runoff in the drainage basin. Flows decreased <br />' throughout the summer to a low flow of 2.74 cfs recorded in <br />October (Table 1). <br />' Surface water chemistry was observed to be stable over the <br />year. The water is basically calcium-bicarbonate in nature (see <br />Trilinear diagram in Appendix 1). A number of parameters were <br />' elevated during June and August which was due to runoff conditions <br />and precipitation events at the time of sampling. These <br />parameters included the major ions (cation/anion balance), TDS, <br />manganese, iron, alkalinity and hardness. A small quantity of oil <br />' and grease was found in the third quarter sample. <br />
