Water quantity was not affected by mining activities. One pond discharge occurred
during 2003 due to a late summer thunderstorm event. Minimal water was retained in
sediment ponds during other times of the year. Discharge from the disturbed area was
nearly non-existent. Coal bed methane (CBM) development and concurrent water
discharge influences the surface and ground water systems. Water quality does not
appear to be impacted by mining activities. A slight increase in total dissolved solids
(TDS) is noted on the Purgatoire River below the confluence with Lorencito Canyon
(160 mg/I upstream; 175 mg/I downstream). This increase is likely due to the higher
TDS in Lorencito Canyon water (750 mg/I). Mining activities did not contribute flow to
Lorencito Canyon in 2003 (see 2003 data for surface station JC-1). Generally, mining
and reclamation activities occur above the local water table and no impact to ground
water is predicted.
Review of the 2003 AHR resulted in the following questions.
For future reports, please include the elevations of the measuring point for each
well. Well levels are reported as feet below this measuring point. Data is plotted
by elevation above MSL, determined by the elevation of the measuring point.
The Division has no further questions at this time. Please respond to any above issues
as appropriate within 60 days. Thank you for conducting monitoring in accordance with
your approved plan.
Sincer y, ~1^~~
Kent Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist II
