Dear Mr. Koblitz:
The Division has received and reviewed Slurco Corporation's submittal
of the Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) for 1996 for the Canadian Mine.
The groundwater from well #7 indicates that the system is returning
as predicted in the "probable hydrologic consequences" discussion of
the permit. There appear to be no impacts to the hydrologic system
in 1996.

RE; Annual Hydrologic Monitoring Report for 1996 - Canadian
Strip Mine (Permit C-81-026)
Dear Ms. Binns,
Slurco Corporation, by this letter, hereby submits the monitoring
data for the above referenced report. This data includes a water
level measurement at Well 7 and water sample laboratory analysis
results from Ponds 1 and Z and Well 7. Water sampling was
conducted in association with the Phase III bond release
application which is planned to be submitted in late 1997.
The Canadian Strip Mine site is located on Bolton Draw, a tributary
of the Republican River within the North Platte River Basin. The
applicable receiving stream standards are designated in Region 12,
Stream Segment 4, which includes most tributaries of the North
Platte River system. Water monitoring at Canadian Strip in 1996
consisted of a single full suite sampling of water from the two
ponds and the backfilled pit well. Grab samples were acquired from
the ponds and well on October 9, 1996.
Quarterly pond inspections for the site have been submitted
throughout the year. Due to heavily drifted accumulations of snow
at the site, a limited discharge from Pond 1 occurred during the
first two weeks of May. No discharges occurred from Pond 2,
however, water levels were near the discharge point, the highest
they have been in several years.
