David Berry _ Annual Hydrology Report - 1988 August 15, 1989 Page Two Surface Sites - Site 900 - Bicarbonate was not reported for the February, April or July 1988 analyses. Site 700 - Bicarbonate was not reported for the February 1988 analysis. - A value for total suspended solids was not reported for the April 1988 analysis. During the February, April and July 1988 sampling episodes for site 900 and the February 1988 sampling for site 700, water quality analysis reports for the sites were cooperatively provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Bicarbonates were not reported by the USGS if the pH was below 8.3. The three pH's recorded were 8.2, 8.0 and 8.0. However, the USGS did report alkalinity as Calcium Carbonate (CaCO ). The samples were titrated with acid to take them from their reported ~Fi levels down to a pH of 4.5 which is then reported as Alkalinity (CaCO ). When taking the pH from the 8.3 level to 4.5 many other items ma,~ effect the titration and may not be Bicarbonate, thus Bicarbonate is not reported. The USGS did supply the following calculation to determine an approximate Bicarbonate (HCO) value with a pH of less than 8.3. Alkalinity (GaCO ) x 1.219 = Bicarbonate (HCO ). All missing Bicarbonate values will 3De obtained from this calculatiof~ and inserted into the data base. In 1989, CYCC assumed the responsibility for sampling and reporting values for USGS stations 700 and 900. The first analyses for stations 700 and 900 will be presented during the 1989 Third Quarter Hydrology Report for Mine 3. Bicarbonate was calculated and will be presented as stipulated in our permit. The TSS value for site 700 in April 1988 was recorded by the USGS, but was inadvertently left out of the CYCC data base. It will be input and will be found in the data base of the 1989 Annual Hydrologic Monitoring Report for Mine 3. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call me.
