Ground Water
Monitoring Programs at Nuc1a and Nurla East. The locations of all monitoring wells within
and adjacent to the Nucla P'i ne and Nucla East mining area can be found on Exhibit 1, 1988
Nucla AHR. Table 5 presents a summary of monitoring well locations and completion
information. Monitoring activities (water level measurements and water quality sampling)
conducted during the 1989 water year at monitoring wells associated with the Nucla Mine
and Nucla East mining area were consistent with the monitoring plans outlined in Appendix
19-1 of the revised Nucla PAP. Peabody received two special requests far additional ground
water monitoring from CMLRD in 1989. In a letter dated March 17, 1989,, Mr. Carl Mount of
CMLRD requested Peabody to conduct a one-time sampling of six of the new (1987-19881 Nucla
East Piezometers during the 1989 spring irrigation season (April-June). This sampling was
accomplished on May 16-17, 1989 by Peabody personnel, and included sampling a total of
seven wells which monitor the three major aquifers (Overburden, Dakota Coal, and
Underburden). CMLRD also requested continuance of quarterly baseline ground water
sampling of the monitoring wells associated with the Nucla East mining area rather than
the semi-annual monitoring proposed by Peabody in the 1988 Nucla PAP (CMLRD review letter
dated July 5, 1989). Peabody honored this request by conducting quarterly ground water
sampling at the Nucla East mining area throughout the 1989 water year.
The following sections briefly describe ground water monitoring artiviities conducted and
data collected at both the Nucla Mine and Nucla East mining area during the 1989 water
year.
Water Levels. All water level data collected during the 1989 water year at monitoring
wells associated with the Nurla Mine and Nuc1a East mining area are contained in Appendix
F. Water level hydrographs have been included in Appendix F for select monitoring wells.
Note that water levels were not obtained during June-September, 1989 for Nucla East wells
CW-N16, N16P1, N17P1, N18 and N18P1 (W. Burbridge property) due to denied access to that
property.
Water Chemistry. Ground water quality data for samples roll ec ted at monitoring wells
associated with the Nurla Mine and Nucla East mining area during the 1989 water year are
presented in Appendix G. Also included are statistical reports for individual wells and
aquifers. Water quality data for the "Burbridge" wells were not obtained during the
fourth quarter 1989 water year, again due to denied access.
13
