III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlreetor
DATE: February 10, 1988
T0: Sandy Brown
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE; Mt. Gunni
I reviewed the compaction
submitted by West Elk Coal
for tests performed at the
Gunnison No. 1 Mine.
Pile "Relative Compaction Test Results"
t No: C-80-007)
testing report which you forwarded me. This report,
ComparlY, presents relative compaction test results
6193' elevation of the waste pile at the Mt.
The report presents the results of three compaction tests. These three tests
determined relative compactions of 87.9%, 90.3% and 113.5%. The stability
analysis included in the permit revision application which addresses the pile
assumes a relative compaction of 90%. One of the reported test's results is
slightly below the specified 90% value. I do not believe this isolated test
result is significant enough to warrant recompaction. Previous results have
exceeded the 90% specification. However, I do believe that we should be
concerned if substandard compaction test results were to reoccur.
In this instance, I recommend that you inform Dennis Conn of our concern.
Point out to him, that while we do not consider this isolated incident
significant, we recommend that he review the compaction practices being used
at the site, in order to ensure that adequate compaction will be achieved
consistently.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
