appropriate base for comparison. Information on degree-days was also derived from the
NOAA records at Hayden.
RESULTS
Data from the 1990 reve~getation monitoring studies at the Seneca II IVline are presented in
tables contained in Appendix 1. Lists of plant species observed during these :studies in the
reclaimed and reference .areas are included in Tables 43 and 44, respectively of Appendix
2. Seed mixes applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in years 1981 through
1987 are included for reference in Appendix 3. Photographs of repre;:entativE: locations
within the reclaimed areas sampled in 1990, as well as photos of the Mountain Brush and
Sagebrush reference areas and the Native Study Area are included in .Appendix 4.
Cover
Cover data from the ten reclaimed areas, two reference areas, and tht; Native Study Area
are presented in Tables 1 through 13. Shown in each are absolute top layer foliar cover,
frequency by species, and relative top layer vegetation cover by species, all organized by
lifeform/provenance categories. Figure 1 graphically depicts the summarized cover data •
tabulated in Table 38, comparing cover values to Mountain Brush and Sagebrush
Reference Area standards. Cover (plus the confidence limitl in the 1983 Wadge, 1983
Wolf Creek, 1986 Wadge Spring, Wadge Pasture, and Wadge Pasture Comparision all
exceed the cover standard set by 90 percent of the Sagebrush Reference Area. Cover
(plus the confidence limitl in the 1986 Wadge Spring and Wadge Pasture areas also
exceeded the confidence set by 90 percent of the Mountain Brush Reference Area.
Average vegetation cover in the reclaimed areas was highest in 1987 (72.1 percentl,
slighlty lower in 1988 (70.9 percentl, and substantially lower in 1989 (48.4 percentl. The
1990 data averaged over all reclaimed areas sampled show a rebound back to 60.2
percent. See Table 38 of this report and cover tables in Appendix 1 of the 1987, 1988,
and 1989 Revegetation Ponitoring Reports for the Seneca II Mine. This pattern was also
seen in the Sagebrush Reference Area where cover fell from 1987 to 1989 and rebounded
in the 1990 data. In the Mountain Brush Reference Area, however, the trend of falling
cover between 1987 and 1989 continued in 1990 with a drop of two percent over 1989
levels. In the Wadge Pasture area, cover likewise continued to drop, with a five percent
drop from 1989 levels. •
6
