I. INTRDDOCT ION

I
On September 23, 1981, the Colorado Fli ned Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD) issued Seneca
Coals, Ltd. a permit to mine. Peabody Coal Company submi ttec their first Annual Hydrology
Report covering the monitoring period from September 9, 1581 to December 31, 1962.
Subsequent reports were submitted for 1983, 1984, and 1985. The follow=. ng report presents
hydrology data and analyses collected between October 1, 198 and September 30, 1986. The
past reporting periods were calendar years, where as this reporting period covers a water
year. All references to 1986 will be for Water Year 1986 unless otherwise noted.
Interpretation and discussion of the data are given to substantiate previously noted
historical trends and to highlight points of hydrological interest.
II. OVERVIEW OF THE REPORTING PERIOD
Between October, 1985 and December, 1986, mining progressed as indicated on Figure 1.
From Figure 1 it is evident that strip mining is being conducted simultaneously in two
areas. In the southern permit area, the VJa dge coal seam is being mined, and in the
northern permit area the Wolf Creek seam is being mined.
A permit renewal was submitted on March 21, 1966. Two sets of responses to CMLRD comments
were submitted on August 29 and October 14, 1966. This latter document is referred to
several times in this text, particularly in regards tc impacts in the Fish Creek Basin.
An April 24, 1986 memo from the CMLRD was written in response to the 1985 Seneca II Annual
Hydrology Report (AHR). The majority of these comments were answered by PCC in a June 5,
1986 memo. Further comments were made by the CMLRD in a July 28, 1986 memo. For issues
that stilt remain to be resolved, the following discussion is provided.
Field conductivities listed in water quality reports are not temperature corrected and,
therefore, do not correspond to lab conductivities at 25°C. A temperature correction
table, Table 27, is provided in this AHR. It is located on the last page of this text for
easy reference when reviewing water quality reports in Appendices B and C.
Discussion of the loss of head at well GY1-545P1 is presented in Section IV.A,S.
Discussion of water quality in iwenty Mine Park (Fish Creek and tributaries) is presented
in Section V.A. and in the 1586 Seneca II Permit Renewal.
