Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
August 7, 1986
T0: Sundance Coal Animas Mine - File No. C-82-055
FROM: J. C. Stevens .1L ~
RE: ANNUAL REVIEW OF HYDROLOGIC MONITORING DATA
Surface Water
The following material was received on a quarterly basis during the last 12
months as required in the Findings of Compliance document:
1. Daily precipitation and temperature records;
2. Discharge and quality (field parameters) data for the sediment
ponds and permanent diversion ditch representing instances of
significant flow in the ditch and/or discharge from the pond;
3. Full suite analysis of significant ditch flows and/or pond
discharges;
4. Monthly sediment pond inspection reports; and,
5. Periodic spoil pile inspection reports.
Missing from the report is the pond inspection for July 1985.
The only apparent problems during the last year with surface water at this
site involved discharges from the pond on two occasions that temporarily
exceeded NPDES limits for settleable solids. The discharges followed washouts
of silt fences by run off from heavy rains. As a result, gabion dams are
reportedly being installed behind the existing silt fences to prevent such
future problems.
As noted in earlier reports, both ditch and pond waters consistently contain
dissolved aluminum and iron, and occasionally other trace metals, at or above
those levels recommended for domestic or agricultural use. These levels are,
however, normal for the area and not indicative of any influence by local
mining activity.
Ground Water
As specified in Stipulations 6 and 13 of the Findings of Compliance document,
semi-annual reports from ground water monitoring wells contained the following:
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
