Additional Page
2001 Annual Report
Daniels Sand Pit #2
M-73-007-SG
Transit Mix Concrete
Anniversary Date: January 7
Overview of Permit Year: During the 2001 operating year there was a great deal of activity at this site.
This was primarily due to the very active construction market throughout the Colorado Springs area, in
spite of declining economic vigor. Mining occurred to a small extent in Phase 3E but extended far into
Phase 4E. Phases lE South and 2E are essentially completed with mining. No mining occurred north of
the Fountain Mutual Ditch corridor.
Very little change occurred on the West Side of Academy Boulevard other than continued
backfilling of the nonhem area and some backfilling of an old pit on the west side beside the railroad
tracks. Ac [his poin[ in time, it appears [he mining is proceeding more rapidly than originally
anticipated, but this does not appear to be inconsistent with the range of variation expected by the
pertnrt.
Annual Repor[ Maps: The four annual report maps for this year are very little different from last year's
maps, due to the lack of change in the gross features of the actual azeas affected. The only major change
was the area contained within active mining on the east side of Academy. That area expanded eastward
far into Phase 4E, nearly reaching the topsoil stockpiles on the east end of this phase. Although a broad
area of Phase 4E has been stripped and some of the fine sand removed, there is still a great deal of
material to be removed from that area. Most of that material is below the upper layer of fine sand.
Affected Lands: The amount of total affected land has not changed significantly since last year.
However, the amount in each category has changed dramatically.
The Schlage Lock remediation program is continuing on the southern edge of Phase 4E and has
been expanded slightly in response to a need for additional treatment capacity. These changes in the
remeditation program do not affect the mining processes and Transit Mix is continuing to work
cooperatively with the managers of these facilities.
No new reclamation was done in the last year as pit edge zones are still involved in some stage of
active mining. Backfilling of selected ponions of the west side was the only reclamation action in the last
year and that is still far from being completed. That is continuing according to plan, but more depth will
be needed before backfilled areas can be placed in final revegetation.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion.
Expected Activity (2002): Mining will continue to a small degree in the southern portions of Phase 3E,
but will mainly be contained within Phase 4E. Few changes are expected to occur on the west side other
than additional backfilling.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a corporate bond.
Transit Mix Concrete 2001 Annual Report M-73-007-SG Daniels Sand Pit J12 Page 1 of 1
