High manganese values may, in part, be due to recharge from the spoil aquifer, •
although high values are often common, especially in alluvial material (Ham,
1989, pge. 86-89). Of the eight walla displaying high values, only two (9HiAL7-2
and ww14) era indieatiag an iacreasia8 trend (both exist is the permit area).
Three walla is preminiag areas (WHALE-2, NSAL14, and Nwd) also display high
values. It should be noted that, while the CDOH uses a standard of 0.2 mg/1,
the EPA states that this standard ie used to protect croDe grown in soils .with a
pH value lower than 6.0. Ia soils with a higher pH (ae are found in the Seaeea
II-W region), a more appropriate etaadard would ba 10 mg/1 (EPA, 1976). This
year, none of the Saaeca II-w wells dieDlayad a value higher than 2.56 mg/1.
one well (Ww14) exhibited a boron value (950 ug/1) that exceeded the CDOH
eCaadard of 750 uq/1. According to the CDOH, the 750 ug/1 standard Se set for
sensitive erope (CDOH, Reg. 41, 1999), sad thnt the limit otherwise i^ 5000
ug/1. Rose of these sensitive Dlaat sDeeias are grown commercially is this
area.
At the Seneca II-w shop well (Nell 201TC), CDOH drinking water staadarde ware •
used to detezmina its suitability. Ro human health etaadards ware exceeded.
The secondary ataadarfl for Iron (0.3 mg/1) was exceeded wish values of 7.29 nad
5.14 mg/1. The secondary atnadard for mnngaaesa (0.05 mg/1) was exceeded with
values of O.1B nad 0.14 mg/1. However, bottled water is consumed at Seaeea II-
w. Also, since the aquifer for the ehoD well (Trout Creek Saadetoae) atarte nt
250 feet below the wedge Coal an8 ie eaDareted by confining shale layers, water
£zom this wall should not be affected by mining nad, therefore, reflects the
natural characterietice of the aquifer.
Ground water Quality Summary. Increasing TDS treads are beginning to be
observed at most walla downgradient of mining. However, one dowagradient well,
exhibits a stable TDS tread.
Agricultural ground water standards ware exceeded this year at certain
monitoring wells. Tab 7 of the seaecn II-N PAP contains a section that
diacuseee the suitability of using water from the various aquifers monitored at •
the Seneca II-W Mine for irrigation or livestock watering.
