This report was prepared by Greystone for Western Fuels-Utah. Both 1992 and
1993 vegetation sampling data was included within the report.
The refuse area revegetation study was designed to demonstrate that revegetation success
criteria can be achieved on the reclaimed refuse piles with less than four feet of non-toxic
cover as required by Rule 4.10.4(5). Eight test plots were constructed and seeded in the
summer of 1990. The plots were constructed of four different depths; 48", 36", 24", 12" of
cover over the refuse. The reports states this to be a four year study with sampling
occurring in 1992, 1993, and 1995. This sampling schedule corresponds to the 2nd, 3rd, and
Soh growing season following seeding.
Vegetative sampling was collected for cover, productivity, and woody plant density. Cover
data was collected using an optical point frame, while productivity was collected by clipping
current year's vegetative growth within a 1 MZ quadrat and measuring oven-dried weight.
Cover data was separated by life form: Annual grasses, Perennial grasses, Annual forbs,
Perennial forbs, Shrubs, Baze ground (soil), Litter, and Rock. Five 100 ft. long transects
consisting of 2 pts. every 4 ft. were collected per plot. Sample adequacy for cover was
achieved on all plots except N1 for 1993 sampling.
1992 data represents the 2nd growing season after planting while 1993 data represents the
3rd growing season after planting. As would be expected 1992 vegetation is dominated by
annual forbs. 1993 data shows an increase in perennial grasses, increase in annual grasses,
and a decrease in annual forbs. All the plots showed a decrease in total vegetative cover,
primarily explained by the substantial decrease in annual forbs. Although the 48" plots had
the lowest total vegetative cover the existing cover was dominated by perennial grasses. The
report notes that the 12" plots had a higher total vegetative cover. It must also be noted
however, that the cover on the 12" and 24" plots was still dominated by annual forbs.
