In addition, <br />the draft radioactive materials license requires the collection oi' <br />surface water samples downstream from the ore sorter. <br />Comment No. 2 - "Concerning item #2, groundwater monitoring may be <br />appropriate if there is an indication that the sedimentation ponds are <br />leaking and that they will be used in the future. However, there are <br />three points to be considered. <br />a) The flocculation process would tend to seal the ponds as <br />effectively as bentonite. <br />b) If the ponds do leak, the water quality should not be any <br />different from the current discharge, and the travel time <br />to the stream is short. Thus there would be no long term <br />impacts if the ponds were removed. <br />c) Once the uranium treatment plant is operating, there should <br />be no need for those ponds. <br />Should the ponds continue to be used, monitoring of grourd <br />water is contemplated in the water quality permit." <br />Response to Comment No. 2 - It is anticipated that the radioactive <br />materials license will require the collection of quarterly ground- <br />water samples from the three observations wells on-site. <br />Comment No. 3 - "Flow rates in Ralston Greek should be taken each time <br />a grab sample is taken, at both upstream and downstream sampling sites. <br />This will provide a correlation between concentrations and stream flow, <br />and will provide information on stream loading (lbs/day)." <br />
