• livestock watering purposes. The above discussion is provided only to serve as a
comparative basis to judge ground water quality. Domestic wells that provide drinking
water for local residents are not from aquifers imparted by mining. Mining at Seneca II
is not believed co be causing the degradation of any monitored aquifer.
Surface Water
Table 13 (Appendix A) lists pertinent information on all NPDES, stream, and spring
monitoring sites at the Seneca II Mine. NPDES Discharge Points 002, 003, 004, and 008 are
monitored weekly for flow and field parameters (pH, conductivity, and temperature).
Monitoring for total suspended solids, total and total recoverable iron, total dissolved
solids, oil end grease, and floating solids is performed in accordance with the terms and
frequencies stipulated in NPDES Permit N0. CO-0000221. Flow at Sites NPDES 002 and 003 is
monitored continuously through the year vie H-flumes with Stevens Type F water level
recorders; flow at Sites NPDES 004 end 008 is monitored continuously via Parshall flumes
equipped with Stevens Type F water level recorders. The only time of the year during
which flow is not monitored continuously is during the winter months when the stilling
• wells ere frozen.
Stream Monitoring Sites SW-S2-1, 2, 5, and b are monitored monthly for instantaneous floe
and field parameters from March through October. Crest stage gages ere located et each of
these stream sites. All crest stage gages are used to record peek flow stage heights.
Peak flows are then calculated by incorporating these peak flow stage values and channel
survey date (stream cross section and slope) into the Manning's Equation.
A l~l- of the NPDES and stream monitoring Sites 7, 2, 5, end b ere sampled three times a year
for water quality. The first sample of the year is collected prior to peak runoff
(March); the second sample is Collected after peak runoff (May or June); and the third
sample is collected during base flow conditions (September). Samples collected at all
these sites were analyzed using the surface water long list, Table 14 (Appendix A).
Four new surface water sites were added et Seneca II in 1987. Site SW-52-10 is et the
mouth of Cow Camp Creek, Site SW-52-11 is on Fish Creek upstream of the confluence with
Cow Camp Creek, Site SW-52.12 is at the mouth of Bond Creek end Site SW-52-13 is on Fish
• Creek downstream of the confluence with Bond Creek. They were monitored monthly May
through September. However, es a result of Technical Revision 20 (approved October 2,
11
