~:
Mr. Grcg Lewick~
Grce Lewicki and Associates
February 13. 1999
on all of the parameters in the standards in 1997 and 1998. Alluvial water samples indicate
little or no influence on the water quality in Trout Creek.
13. Comparison of 1997 and 1998 hydrologic data with PHC section of permit. The data
in the hydrology reports support the PHC (probable hydrologic consequences) described in
the permit application, which are:
Pale 3
a. No hydrologic impacts to Middle Creek.
b. No hydrologic impacts to Trout Creek.
14. Suitability of surface water for intended post-mining uses. Trout Creek is the only surface water
that could serve as a supply for the Apex Mine's planned post-mining land uses of livestock grazing
and wildlife habitat. There is no reason to believe water in Trout Creek is unsuitable for those uses.
15. Suitability of ground water for intended post-mining uses. The volume of alluvium in the permit
area probably is insufficient to store enough ground water for watering livestock or wildlife. Ground
water in bedrock aquifers probably has not been impacted by mining operations and therefore should
have the same utility as prior to mining.
16.. Off-site hydrologic impacts. Mining operations at Apex appear to have not caused an impact to the
quality or quantity of surface or ground water beyond the permit boundary. Manganese and dissolved
iron levels in future alluvial samples should be closely checked as a result of the 1.58mg/1 of
manganese and 2.39 mg/l of dissolved iron reported in the 1998 downstream alluvial samples (see
comment 10, above).
17. Need to update permittee's address. The reclamation reports show an address for Sunland Mining
Corporation that is different from the address currently in the permit on page 4a. If the address on the
reclamation reports is correct, then please submit a Minor Revision updating information to ensure
compliance with Section 2.03.4 of the Regulations.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,

Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Daniel I. Hernandez, CDMG
