These
concentrations are rapidly diluted and adsorbed downstream in Sage
Creek, as demonstrated by the reduced concentrations downstream at Site
YSS2. The ammonium nitrate blasting agent is most likely the source.
These values will subside after mining.
Sulfide values also require extra calculations. The standard is 0 .002
mg/1 un-ionized H2S, while the method detects for un-ionized H2S and •
ionized HS. The following table calculates the actual un-ionized H2S
concentration of the exceedences reported on Table 12.
Site Date H2S+HS,mg/1 pH ~H2S H2S concentration, mg/1
NPDESI2 4-17-02 0.04 8.11 7.5 0.003 A
YSS2 0.04 8.09 7.5 0.003 A
* = elevated detection limit, did not calculate
A = exceedence
Only two samples experienced exceedences of the sulfide standard. Any
sulfides present in surface water should eventually oxidize to sulfates,
SCC is currently appealing to the CDOH to have these standards relaxed.
These standards were based on the presence of fish in the lower portions
of Sage Creek. However, the upper portions that Yoast discharges into
have no fish present.
•
14
