1992 Production and Geologic Conditions
• Cyprus Orchard Valley Coal Corporation (COVCC) produced approximately 1,096,000
tons of opal from the Orchard Valley West Mine in 1992 under Federal Coal Leases
C-37210 and C-27432. Production was sustained throuc~out the twelve months
crn~rising calendar year 1992.
Mining at the Orchard Valley West Mine during 1992 entailed both panel advance
development aryl pillar retreat extraction. Panel A+ development initiated in
January 1992 and was coi[g~leted by the end of February. Retreat mining of Panel
A+ was coi~leted by mid-March. Zhe first four crosscuts of Panel B had been
developed by January 1, 1992. Panel B advance development continued in March and
was oonq~leted by mid-April. Retreat mining, including limited floor extraction
within the buffer zone over Stevens (Ulch and full pillar extraction outside of
the buffer zone, was completed by October 1, 1992. Panel C development co[[mienced
in October with twenty four crosscuts ocmipleted by January 1, 1993. Advance
development of the II West Submains to the west of the South III stilanains
continued in January, 1992 and had progressed through crosscut 43 by the end of
the year. Panel Y advance development was initiated in late October with three
crosscuts developed by the end of the year. Panel Z saw one crosscut developed
by the close of 1992.
Panel A+:
Mined Length: Approximately 1000 feet of panel advance development followed by
approximately 750 feet of pillar extraction upon retreat from the
section.
• Overburden Thickmess: Varying from 800 to 1000 feet.
Mining Height: 9-11 feet on advance; 15-18 feet on retreat.
Roof: Comprised of mudstones tending to air slack. Top coal of 2-3 feet in
thickness was left on the roof to prevent problems associated with this
strata type.
Ribs: Rib sloughage was minimal with ribs standing very well.
Floor: The lower "D" seam was used as floor which provided competent conditions.
Anomalous Conditions: Small seeps from both roof and floor sources were
encountered on development and resulted in muddy areas
and temporary pools of standing water.
Panel B:
Mined Length: Approximately 1650 feet of panel advance development followed by
approximately 1900 feet of pillar extraction upon retreat from the
section.
Overburden Thickness: Varying from approximately 600 to 800 feet.
• Mining Height: 9-11 feet on advance. 15-18 feet in retreat in pillared
areas; maximum 16 feet on retreat in partial extraction
areas.
1
