• ADDITIONAL COMMENTS.
i
PIKEVIEW QUARRY
PERMIT NIN-77-211
ENHANCED RECLAMATION NECO77ATIONS: Negotiations over enhanced reclamation are
continuing and nearing completion. It is possible that a result of the negotiations will be a
complete redesign of the remainder of the quarry, including the removal of as much as 26 to
27 acres of currently permitted but yet undisturbed land from the mining plan and the
production of an over excavation hole to make up for the removed reserves.
LANDSLIDE.. On ]anuary 4, 1993, a block of limestone approximately 25 feet thick and
covering about 5 acres moved about 300 to 500 feet down the mountainside. The slide
occurred on land that had not been mined by Castle Concrete but bad been mined previously
by Peter Kiewit and Sons in the 1950's when the Air Force Academy was built. The slide
occurred on a previously identified slip zone within the formation. This is the thud such slide
since the early 1970's. No further sliding occurred after the initial event. A monitoring
system was established on the slide azea by CTL Thompson as a part of then assessment of the
slide event, remedial measures, and judgment regarding the hazard. The company took
immediate action to initiate removal of the material, as recommended by CTL Thompson
geotechnical engineers, so no further sliding could occur. As a result of mining by Castle
Concrete, the slip zone is eliminated thereby removing all possibility for future mass wasting
of such large dimensions. The slide was reported to the Division. MSHA inspected the
operation shortly after the slide occurred, noticed that a slide had occurred and advised the
company to remove the material. MSHA did not express any additional concerns over the
safety 6a7ard. No additional steeply sloping material exists that could slide on the slip zone.
Two other clay seams father into the operation are potential slip zones but have never shown
activity in this or any other area. These other zones are also removed as a result of mining by
Castle Concrete.
Page 1 Supplemental Sheet M-77-211 1993 Annual Report
