Barra <br />Drvisio~ Diretior <br />Re: Coal Refuse Revegetation Plots, File No. C-81-018 <br />Dear Mr. Shrestha: <br />We received the coal waste and topsoil analysis from the sample Tim Chervick <br />and I split on April 24, 1990 as well as the additional subsoil analysis from <br />the sample Tim subsequently collected from sub area #4, <br />Though some variation exists between sample splits for certain parameters, <br />both refuse data sets indicate highly sodic, moderately saline material, No <br />apparent problems were indicated for topsoil or subsoil material, As I <br />indicated by letter of June 8, 1990, upward diffusion of salts into replaced <br />cover soils could be a potential reclamation concern, I would recommend the <br />following sampling be conducted upon completion of plot construction this <br />summer: <br />In both the north facing and south facing study area, at least one <br />representative sample should be taken from the 12" cover depth plots. <br />Also in both study areas, at least one representative sample should be <br />taken from each ]2" cover soil increment in the 48" cover depth plots. <br />Sampling procedures and locations will need to be documented to allow for <br />valid comparison based on future sample results. Each sample should be <br />analyzed for texture, electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption <br />ratio. By repeating the sampling in future years, if should be possible <br />to determine whether any upward migration of salts is occurring, The <br />results should provide some indication of the rate and extent of upward <br />migration, if any, and the effect, if any, of soil depth and slope <br />exposure on salt migration. <br />Sincerely, <br />,~~ <br />Dan 7.
