-2-
3. Surface drainage on the northwest side of the slide is draining into
the slide. Drainage is relatively minor and probably will not
create additional problems.
II. Suggested Long-Term Evaluation
1. I would suggest a spring survey of the entire permit area as soon as
possible. An existing survey was done for the baseline study and
may not be up-to-date. P&M does not regularly monitor springs and
it may be that the slide area had springs prior to the failure and
other areas should be checked. When a spring is found it should be
noted on a map and an estimate made of the flow quantity and if the
flow is clear or muddy. I will include this in the hydrology
recommendations as part of the mid-term to become an annual survey.
2. I hope long-term evaluations will be addressed by whomever handles
the study of the slide. I would like to see several wells installed
and holes drilled along the slope of the reclaimed West Ridge area
to examine what the saturation levels are in this area. I would
also like to see several holes in the unreclaimed spoils northeast
of the slide to determine if and why they are still stable. There
will be problems associated with well installation if conditions are
as suspected and the spoils water has sufficient head to create
artesian conditions. It will be extremely difficult to isolate a
specific zone because the hole probably will not stay open long
enough. Hopefully the consultant will be aware of the problems that
may exist and have the appropriate equipment on site. I would like
to be closely involved in the well installation program, if
possible, so I know how reliable the data will be. I think that the
area of greatest concern will be the West Ridge Area with some
potential problems also in the southern portion of the Moffat area.
/ep
cc: Philip Saletta
Ed Bischoff
Doc.
