2005 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, W est Flatiron, Apache Rocks,
and South of Divide Mining Areas
4.12 Traverse K-K'
Traverse K-K' begins at Location 9 (stock pond P23-4), thence to MDWs 22-02 and 22-02b, and
ends at MDW 23-03. The traverse is above the eastern parts of mined longwal] pane122 and the
northeastern part of un-mined longwal] panel 23, where the overburden depth to the B-Seam
ranges from 2,200 to 2,250 feet.
Light gray to light brown soil, colluvium, and local siltstone and claystone outcrops of the
Wasatch Formation and the Ohio Creek Member of the Mesaverde Formation were observed in
the traverse. No subsidence Features were observed.
4.12.1 Location 12
Rockfall north of the main road to West Flatiron, observed and photographed east across the
draw at the same location as in July 2004 (Figure 13). Location 12 is along Traverse I-I'.
The rockfall is observed and photographed again this year to determine whether any changes
have occurred during the past year. The rockfall, which occurred on June 30 2004, is located
above the north central part of longwal] panel 14. The longwal] panel was mined about 3 years
ago. Subsidence processes were expected to be complete two years prior to the occurrence of the
rockfall, however, the mining probably had an impact on this rockfall, in view of the steep slopes
and rugged cliff topography.
831-032.710 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
