1987, collection of additional premanagement fall and winter
• raptor data under a specific experimental design will not be
possible. This makes the collection of data in fall 1987 and
winter 1987/88 more crucial. Such a raptor study will probably
be required as part of the wildlife baseline study. Initiating
it this fall would be unnecessary from a regulatory perspective,
although it would provide important biological data which would
be valuable in permitting and would demonstrate good intentions
to resource agencies.
If there is interest in pursuing either of these studies, appropriate
agencies should be contacted to justify their necessity (in
a permitting context), define specific study goals, and agree
on methodology. At the request of Mike Figgs, I will be submitting
a proposal for ferret studies.
Finally, it is likely that a deer study will have to be conducted
to identify the seasonal use and importance of the study area
to deer. I anticipate that this study would involve radio-collared
animals which would be followed over 18-24 months. The duration
and scope of the study would have to be negotiated with the
resource agencies. This study should be initiated with adequate
lead time for study results to be incorporated into final design
considerations associated with the Special Use 9ermit.

• 18
