• waste rock was first introduced to the site in the fall of 1998 and again in <br />1999, both times in limited quantities. Its impact (if any) on groundwater <br />quality has not been recognized. While altered within the Keenesburg Mine <br />site itself, general ground water flow patterns in the vicinity of the site <br />appear not to have been significantly changed (or interrupted) by the past <br />mining activities, or by the ongoing ash disposal work. <br />Six ground water monitoring wells were sampled by CEC on a quarterly <br />basis in 2002. These wells are designated AMW-1, AMW-2, DH-96, DH- <br />122, FPW and SMW-2. Water quality analysis includes both the fieldwork <br />and the analytical laboratory testing of water samples collected from these <br />wells. <br />Field measurements: <br />Static water level is a tape measurement from the top of the well casing (a <br />known ground elevation) to the current water level in the well. This <br />measurement follows visual inspection of the area surrounding the well and <br />precedes any sampling activity. Water sample temperatures are determined <br />using a temperature probe placed in each sample as soon as it is collected. <br />• Specific conductance is obtained from an electrical conductivity meter. <br />Each field water sample is tested for pH against a baseline pH neutral <br />solution (7.0), after adjustment to the water temperature of the individual <br />sample. All data collected during field-testing is recorded in the field <br />logbook, which is kept at the Keenesburg Mine office. Graphic displays of <br />this information for each well (the most recent five-year period) can be <br />found in a subsequent section of this Report titled, "Analysis of Water <br />Sampling Field Data". <br />Laboratory analysis: <br />The wells are sampled in a sequence that follows the order of least to <br />greatest level of salinity. At the end of 2002 this sequence was: (1) FPW, <br />(2) AMW-1, (3) DH-96, (4) DH-122, (5) SMW-2, and (6) AMW-2. Ash <br />Monitor Well No. 2 (AMW-2) has been showing continued signs of <br />recharge since the A-Pit reclamation activities were concluded. This has <br />been the trend since the end of 1999 when A-Pit reclamation was <br />completed. Water was found in this well during each of the quarterly <br />samplings for 2002. Samples were obtained for both field testing and <br />• laboratory analysis, but the "purge procedure", while improving over the <br />2001 sampling, can still only be described as marginal owing to the small <br />AHR-2002 -48- <br />
