Mr. Jim Dille
September 19, 1997
Page 2
tailings deposited at high cyanide levels was indeed low in cyanide as indicated in the data
presented in the Reclamation Evaluation. At that meeting, BMRI indicated that they were
drilling several additional holes in order to verify the previous results. BMRI pointed out that
such drilling was not necessary to finalize the reclamation evaluation report or its conclusions,
but would just provide additional information. That information was not submitted to the
Division and is being included with this letter.
BMRI [hen formally responded to each of the Division's concems in the memos
provided as well as to each point raised by the other interested parties in a letter dated October
I, 1993. It should be noted that this response was submitted to the Division and to the
appropriate representatives for the interested parties. To date, BMRI has received no response
from the Division or the interested parties on their responses to concems raised by the
Division with the drilling program and subsequent test results.
The additional information enclosed with this letter supplements the previously
submitted information. We continue to believe that this information is just a supplement and
that the key focus should be on review of the October 1, 1993 responses provided by BMRI
and on the current performance of the tailings impoundment underdrain. The tailings
underdrain information has been provided to the Division on an ongoing basis, however
current underdrain values aze referenced in this letter.
We believe that a cazeful review of [he October 1, 1993 responses, and information
gathered since that time, clearly indicates the tailings deposited during early operations at the
San Luis Mine do not represent a long term threat to the environment and the approved
reclamation plan does not require changes.
We hope that this information is helpful to the Division in resolving this remaining
item. Please do not hesitate to contact Ron Zumwalt or me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~ ~ ~
Anne C. Baldrige
cc: B . Lyle
R . Zumwalt
D . Massey
R.
