Grand County #201
' Scholl Gravel Pit
EXHIBIT 0
Mining Plan
' History of the Pit:
Grand County #201 -Scholl Gravel Pit was first permitted by Grand County in 1977-1978
under permit number M-84-156. This permit is being expanded with this application under
the 112 regulations. The purpose of the gravel then, as now, is to provide sand and gravel
' for county road construction and maintenance.
Mining Method to be Employed:
' BLM will lay out the pit boundaries and the County will fence the west, south and east
boundaries prior to any surface disturbing activities. All surface disturbance will be kept
' within the fenced boundaries.
The site will be mined in stages from the existing pit, on the west, in an easterly direction
' to the eastern limits of the site. A twelve inch (12") depth of topsoil will be stripped first
using scrappers and dozers, and the material stockpiled along the southernly boundary,
and the southeast area of the site. Topsoil will be segregated from overburden piles.
Topsoil piles will be dozer tracked and seeded to stabilize the piles. `TOPSOIL - DO NOT
REMOVE" signs will be placed on all topsoil piles. A sign is in place at the westerly
' entrance (see drawing exhibit "C") to limit access to authorized persons only. The gravel
will be excavated with one front end loader and one crawler type tractor. The excavated
material will be fed to a 180 tons per hour crusher, one to three conveyors, a stacker and
t a generation trailer. On occasion there may be one additional front end loader and no
more than eight trucks operating out of the pit at any time.
No water diversions or impoundments are anticipated.
The pit will disturb approximately five to six acres at any one time. The excavation for the
expanded pit is expected to begin in the fall of 1998 and continue for a period of twenty
years. Each phase will be mined as needed, and phase three only after proper
archeological clearance has been granted by the Bureau of Land Management. This
mining will proceed from west to east to maintain historic drainage patterns and access to
County Road 201. The gravel pit will be sequentially reclaimed as it is mined west to east.
A settling pond will be constructed and maintained wherever there is an outflow from the
mining area to trap sediment before it can leave the site, The existing County Road 201
will not be shifted to the north until archaeological clearance has been granted by the BLM.
The top fifteen to twenty feet of gravel is to be mined after the removal of the topsoil.
Gravel and glacial till continues for an unknown depth below the stratum to be mined.
