At that time the areal extent of the
workings was 1,156 acres. The Orchard Valley West Mine (West Mine)
was opened in January, 1987. The aerial extent of the West Mine
was 224 acres at the end of 1990. The Coal being mined at both
mines is the "D" Seam of the Mesaverde Coal Member.
The main hydrologic monitoring was begun at the mines in 1983.
This report presents the results of the 1990 monitoring program.
This report also includes the results of previous monitoring.
The report is divided into six. parts: 1) Steven's Gulch, 2) F.oatcap
Creek, 3) Terror Creek, 4) Coal Gulch, Smith Creek, and North Fork
Gunnison Alluvium, 5) Bedrock We11s and 6) Discharge Stations. The
monitoring locations are shown on Figure 2 and summarized on Table
1. The water quality monitoring includes field parameters (Table
2), water quality parameters (Table 3) and NPDES parameters (Table
4). The 1990 samples and most of the previous water quality
samples were analyses by ACZ Laboratories, Inc. Steamboat Springs,
Colorado, a USEPA certified laboratory. This report includes data
