Revegetated Areas
No azeas were revegetated during the reporting period.
Previously Revegetated Areas
EFMC revegetated approximately 25.1 acres of the reclaimed mine site area during the spring
and fall of 1995 following completion of backfilling and grading operations. Limited interseeding
was conducted in 1996, 1999 and 2000. The color-coded perimeters of the initial permanently
seeded azea, and subsequently interseeded areas, are shown on attached Figure 1, Mine Site.
Additional Monitoring Information
EFMC did not conduct vegetation monitoring during the reporting period.
Noxious Weed Monitoring
EFMC continued to monitor a group of Canada Thistle in a 20' by 20' patch in the reclaimed
area east of the shop building. These plants were treated with herbicide in 1998 and 1999.
EFMC applied Rodeo herbicide, manufactured by Monsanto, using a 1 % solution. The thistle
plants failed to regenerate since being sprayed.
EFMC monitored a small patch of Canada Thistle plants on the slope immediately above the
entrance to the 8' yard culvert. The plants were controlled in 2000 with Rodeo herbicide,
manufactured by Monsanto, using a 1% solution. Additional spraying was conducted on one
occasion, during August 2001. No significant reappearance of the these weeds was observed
during the reporting period.
EFMC plans to monitor the existing noxious weed locations as well as the entire reclaimed area
in the coming growing season, and will continue to mitigate noxious weed establishment.
Conclusions
Permanent vegetation on the mine site, both on topsoiled and non-topsoiled areas, continues to
show adequate establishment. The record-setting drought occurring during the reporting period
and the continued grazing of the landowner's cattle severely stunted grass/vegetation growth and
certainly limited the emergence of new vegetation.
EFMC will continue to closely monitor erosion and vegetation success on the reclaimed areas.
Overall reclamation of the disturbed areas continues to effectively minimize the mining impacts
and promote establishment of the site to its approved postmining land use capabilities.
