(Seneca II-W 21ek) within reclamation in NW'/ NW'/< Section 23, TSN, R88W. The Seneca II-
W 2 lek is located approximately 0.6 mile northeast of the Seneca II-W lek, and may be a
satellite lek of Seneca II-W.
Both lek sites were checked for activity on 24 April 2005 within about one hour of
sunrise. During the survey, a biologist walked to a vantage point near each lek to count all birds
present. If vegetation or topography prevented a complete count from a distance, the biologist
walked out to the lek and flushed the birds for a final count.
Searches for new leks on the Seneca II-W permit area were conducted from one-half hour
before to one hour after sunrise.also on 24 Apri12005. Two biologists searched for displaying
grouse while slowly driving or walking within the permit azea. Frequent stops were made at
vantage points to scan and listen for birds.
GOLDEN EAGLE NEST MONITORING
Known golden eagle nests near the permit area were checked for activity on 24 April
2005. Biologists observed the nests through a spotting scope from a vehicle parked at a vantage
• point. Nests were watched until their status (active or inactive) could be determined.
SANDHILL CRANES
In 2005, biologists seazched for sandhill cranes by walking and driving through portions
of the survey area where potential nesting habitat (i.e., mazshes, reservoirs, and moist drainages)
exists. Biologists also watched and listened for crane activity while conducting other surveys
and traveling in the area.
RESDLTS
BIG GAME
The sky was mostly clear during the aerial survey on 3 February 2005. Snow cover was
patchy, with baze ground on southern and western slopes and approximately 1 to 2 feet of snow
cover in other areas. In general, snowfall was lower than average for the area during winter
2004-2005. Visibility during the survey was rated as good.
•
2005 Seneca II-W Mine Wildlife Monitoring - Page 3
