A total of 43.0 acres were permanently seeded in the south mine
block of the Seneca fI-W Mine in 1994. Seedings included 43.0 acres seeded with Seed Mix
No. 1 - Upland Sites and Ephemeral Drainages and supplemented ui th additional forb and
shrub seed (Table 94.2). There were no permanent revegetation~activities in the north
mine block. Seeded areas are shown on Exhibit 94.2. Seedbed preparation in the seeded
• areas was restricted due to replacement of live-handfed topsoil. Seeding uas completed
with a modified rangeland type drill seeder equipped with two seed boxes (one for small
seed and one for large seed) and depth bands on the disc openers. The seed mixes were
spliT into small and Large seed components for placement in the proper seed box. Small
seeded species are broadcast from the small seed box, while large seeded species are
drilled from the large seed box. All permanent Seedings were completed in September.
No mulching activities were conducted during 1994. All permanently revege2ated areas
received a cover crop of Regreen, a sterile hybrid Agroovron/7 ri ticum cross. The cover
crop seeding rate was 20 PLS pounds per acre.
Monitoring. Revegetation monitoring was not conducted at the Seneca 11-w mine in 1994.
Weed Control. Survey of noxious weeds was carried out on the mine permit area during the
1994 field season. Weed control activities were conducted only along the mine entrance
road, near Pond 006, and near Pond 009. Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) was the target
species in control areas. The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons
. of 22K Tordon and 0.5 gallons of Banvel with 250 gallons of eater. A spot spray gun was
used to concentrate control activities on target areas. The herbicitle mix, based on
b
