i • Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 53.00% ground cover within the 1987 Reclamation Area. Bare soil
comprised 23.00`Yo of the ground cover encountered in the 1987 Reclamation Area.
Herbaceous Production
'iotai herbaceous production on the 198/ Reclamation Area was 135.39 g/m2 (1206.84
lb/ac). Perennial grasses dominated herbaceous production, contributing 134.03 g/m2
(1194.'71 lb/ac) or 99 percent of total herbaceous production. Annual grasses
contributed 0.03 g/m2 (0.26 lb/ac), or 0.02 percent to herbaceous production in this
area. Perennial forbs were present in the production sampling in this area and
contributed 0.80 g/m2 (7.13 lb/ac), accounting for 0.6 percent of the total mean
herbaceous production. Annual forbs accounted for 0.53 g/m2 (4.7216/ac) and 0.4
percent of total herbaceous production.
Species Diversity
Within the 1987 Reclamation Area four lifeforms were represented; graminoids, forbs,
succulents, and woody shrubs. The lifeforms included seven species of perennial
grasses, four annual forbs, one succulent, and one woody shrub. Of the species
encountered on the 1987 Reclamation Area, ten were native and three were introduced.
• Perennial and biennial species outnumbered annual species by ten to three. Seasonality
of 198? Reclamation Area sY~~:2:. ~.~:.s sp: bc:.~:.:.: cool :,;,aso.~, warm season, and
evergreen species. Three graminoids were cool season species and four were warm
season species. With the exception of Helianthus annuus, all forb species were
identified as cool season. The succulent and shrub species were evergreen.
Five perennial grasses represented greater than three percent relative cover. These
species included; Sporobo/us cryptandrus with S I.45% relative cover, Calamovi/fa
longifo/ia with 21.58% relative cover, Andropogon hal/ii, with 7.47% relative cover,
Agropyron cristatum providing 4.98% relative cover, and Bromus marginatus with
3.32%4 relative cover .
COIViPARISON OF RECLAIMED AREAS AND REFERENCE AREA
The monitoring of the revegetated areas allows for the identification of vegetation
community development trends during the extended liability period. Comparison of the
reclaimed area mean values for vegetation cover, herbaceous production, and species
composition illustrates whether revegetation has been successful, or whether additional
measures need to be initiated to enhance vegetation community development. The
tables'below allow the comparison of the mean parameter values with the standard to be
achieved, either from the reference area in the case of vegetation cover or herbaceous
production, or the established standard for species composition.
-ia
J
