1.0 INTRODUCTION
Two Above Ground Storage Tanks (ASTs), one 20,000 gallons capacity, and one 8,000 gallons
capacity were installed at the D-2 Mine site circa 1975 and were removed circa 1993. Umetco
personnel performing site reclamation first noticed soil vapor odors in the area in August 1997.
The site was characterized and an initial characterization report prepared by Tellco
Environmental (Tellco, 1997) was submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment (CDPHE) in October of 1997.
Umetco has prepared the following plan for the one-time bioremedial treatmentt and on-site
disposal of these petroleum contaminated soils.
2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
The subject site is located in the south half of Section 2, Township 42 North, Range :20 West,
NMPM, in San Miguel County, Colorado. The site is on property owned by Larry Deremo, and
reclamation activity at the site is controlled by Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
permit number M/77/288.
The ground cover material in the area of the fuel spill is bare soil and mine waste spoil. A mine
headframe and hoist house are located approximately 150 feet northwest of the spill area.
There are no known water wells within 500 feet of the spill area. The closest well has a static
water level of 25 feet. The depth to ground water at the site is not known.
Lab analysis, reported on 9/12/97, confirmed total BTEX concentrations ranging from no-detect
to 9.4 mg/kg, and TEPH concentrations ranging from no-detect to 25,000 mg/kg. The estimated
average of the TEPH concentration of the contaminated soils is approximately 6,900 mg/kg.
The extent of contamination is approximately 90 feet wide by 110 feet long, with estimated
depths ranging from 0.5 feet to 3.0 feet below the ground surface (provided that the
contamination does not extend below a sandstone cap rock layer underneath the contaminated
soils).
Refer to the initial site characterization report (Tellco, 1997) for more details.
D-2PETROLEUM CONTAMINATED SOILS
Page 1
