Introduction <br /> A, Study Objectives - Phase I: <br /> The objectives of this Phase I overview study are threefold: <br /> (1) to determine the environmental legal requirements to be <br /> <br />~ met by Rocky Mountain Rock Products (RMRP) in obtaining <br />T <br />' .. federal, state, and county permits to continue operation of <br /> their Deer Creek quarry, <br /> , <br />:~ . <br />(2) to view the present quarry operation, its biophysical environ- <br /> _ ment and RMRP development plans, and <br /> (3) to design an adequate baseline and impact assessment program <br /> and monitoring and reclamation program for a Phase II study <br /> ; aimed at fulfilling the various permit requirements. <br /> , <br />~ :,:,~~.;,_. B.- Location <br /> ,~,. <br />~-: The Deer Creek rock quarry is located on the easternmost flank <br /> ~ , <br /> ;;;,':;.:;'. of the Front Range in Jefferson County about 10 miles southwest <br /> ~. <br />! <br /> ° <br />~''; ~ <br />, of Littleton and 5 miles west of Chatfield Lake (Map 1). <br /> $.~-'" C. Deer Creek Quarry in Perspective. <br /> <br />;;;;`,,.'. The Deer Greek quarry has been in operation since 1970 under variances <br />' '~~'~ <br />~. granted at that time. About 200,000 cubic yards of rock (granite <br />~ ;,:,, <br /> <br />, ,~ end schist) have been removed to date with a total development <br />, <br />~ .... <br />of 1,700,000 cubic yards anticipated. <br />~. . <br />Although the bulk of the rock material has yet to be removed, <br /> <br />~ <br />, virtually all of the surface disturbance related to topsoil removal, <br />. '.. watershed disruption, vegetation removal, wildlife displacementw <br /> °. <br />and visual disturbance has already occurred.
