I STABILITY ANALYSIS:
Stability conditions were analyzed utilizing a computer-
assisted limit equilibrium method of slices. This particular
program utilizes Spencer's method for analysis which is capable
of analyzing stability conditions not only in circular modes of
failure but also for randomly specified shear surfaces. Areas
investigated in this particular stability analysis were as
follows:
Section A - potential site for the construction of a new fan
portal facility located approximately 100 to 200 feet west of the
existing main entry portal.
Section B - the area immediately above and below the
existing main entry portal.
Section C - another potential site for the location of a new
intake or fan portal located approximately 100 feet east of the
main entry portal.
Section D - the area immediately above and below the existing
' fan portal.
I Section E - the extreme eastern end of the existing access
road which may be subject to modification for the construction of
a larger radius turn in the access road in that area.
The area of the site has been subject to geologic and
engineering geologic mapping by Mr. Walter R. Junge of the
Colorado Geological Survey. Results of this mapping indicate
that the site is located in an area of known instability. it was
7 therefore anticipated that results of analyses might yield
J factors of safety very near unity for many of the conditions
I considered.
7
