Memorandum to Christine Johnston
1 October 7, 1999
Page 5
' Healing and sealing of the former cracks is now complete, due to the natural processes of
sloughing, erosion, and deposition.
Reexamination of Locations 4, 5, and 6 of September 1998:
' • Cracks at Location 4 are no longer visible in northern area of topsoil pile. Healing and
sealing is complete.
1 • New cracks are visible at Location 5 on the berm of drainage ditch. Cracks are considered
to be at least 95 percent attributable to continued mass-gravity movement in the area that
is not related to subsidence processes.
I • At Location 6 of September 1998 there aze some fresh cracks as a result of mass-gravity
movements that are likely caused by road construction.
1 Location 4. Located near the crown of the topsoil pile at approximately the same location as
Location 4 of September 1998.
• On the east part of the pile are two cracks 2 to 4 ft apart and % to 1 inch wide that trend
generally N40°W. The cracks are 30 to 50 ft long and aze 6 to 8 inches deep. The
northem crack curves northwazd near its termination towazds the northwest. The
_ southern crack continues on trend to termination.
• On the west side of topsoil pile is a crack 10 to 15 ft long, as much as %z-inch wide and 6
inches deep, that trends N10°W.
I • These cracks are believed to be the result of settling and mass-gravity spreading of the
topsoil pile, and not mining related.
Reexamination of Location 7 of 1998 (Springs G-16 and G-16A):
• Spring G-16 is flowing normal for conditions according to Ron Hanna. This spring was
flowing 2.5 gpm on 5-7-99.
• Spring G-16A, which started flowing in May 1996 and was flowing 1 gpm on 5-7-99, was
dry when Ron visited the site 7-8-99. The emergence and decline of this spring may be
related completely to nearby construction activities-not mining related.
1 Wright Warer Engineers, Inc., 2490 W. 26'" Avenue, Ste. 100A, Denver, CO 80211
Tel. 3 0314 80.1 70 0; Faz. 303/480.1020, e-mail:krwright@wrighhvater.com
