glomerata) comprised almost all of the total for introduced perennial cool season grasses. The
• introduced forbs were comprised of three species with the major contributor, being alfalfa. Native
annual and biennial forbs and native perennial forbs each accounted for 6.7 percent of total
vegetation cover. Four introduced annual and biennial forbs contributed to total vegetation cover,
while only three native perennial forbs contributed to total vegetation cover. Introduced annual
grasses contributed 1.7 percent to total vegetation cover while native annual and biennial forbs
accounted for 1.1 percent of total vegetation cover.
Total vegetation cover was 35.0 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values
were 0.8, 36.4, 26.0, and 1.8 percent respectively. Species density averaged 22.5 species per
100 sq. m.
Herbaceous Production (Table 5)
Herbaceous production for alfalfa averaged 144.5 pounds per acre, while for all species other
than alfalfa the average was 1855.8 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous production for this
reclaimed area averaged 1,998.5 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density (Table 6)
Native shrubs averaged 190.2 individuals per acre. Big sagebrush and mountain snowberry each
contributed more than one third of this total. Other contributing species were Gambel's oak,
hitterbrush and chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp. melanocarpa). Total woody plant density for
this area averaged 190.2 individuals per acre.
1999 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 9 through 12)
• Cover (Table 7)
Introduced annual and biennial forbs were the most dominant species in this young reclaimed
area, averaging 64.5 percent of total vegetation cover. Jim Hill mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum)
accounted for almost one-third of this total. Twolobe speedwell and deviYs shoestrings
(Polygonum arenastrum) each accounted about for one-fifth of the total. Russian thistle (Sa/sola
australis) and prickly lettuce each averaged about one-tenth of the total. Five other species from
this lifeform contributed to measurable vegetation cover. Native perennial cool season grasses
accounted for 24.8 of total vegetation cover. Mountain brome averaged nearly three-fourths while
western wheatgrass provided another one-fifth of this total. Slender wheatgrass contributed
nearly one-tenth of this total. Introduced perennial cool season grasses accounted for 5.3 of total
vegetation cover. Orchard grass contributed more than three-fourths of the total. Native perennial
forbs averaged 3.8 percent of total vegetation cover. Blue flax accounted for nearly all of this
total. Native annual and biennial forbs and introduced annual grasses each accounted for 0.8
percent of total vegetation cover.
Herbaceous Production (Table 8)
Total herbaceous production for all species other than alfalfa averaged 1,582.7 pounds per acre.
No alfalfa was observed in this reclamation area.
Woody Plant Density (Table 9)
Native shrubs averaged 32.4 individuals per acre. Mountain snowberry contributed more than
three-fifths of the total. Bitterbrush and chokecherry each accounted for about one-fourth of this
total. Total woody plant density for this area averaged 32.4 individuals per acre.
Aspen Extended Reference Area
(Photographs 13 through 16)
Cover (Table 10)
