Subsitlence Field Observations
West Elk Mine
July 22-24, 2003
4.3.4 Traverse Q-Q'
Traverse Q-Q' is the final traverse of the field observation this year and begins at the intersection
of the drill road on the east side of Deep Creek at the boundary common to Sections 2 and 35 and
ends at the Methane Drainage Wel] MDW-17A, B, and C (3 inclined drainage wells).
• The methane drainage well is located above the southeastern pan of longwall Panel 17.
Approximately 3,500 feet of the eastern pan of this panel was mined out as of July 7, 2003.
• The new drill road traversed exposes thick soil and colluvium and local weathered bedrock.
The unusually tall aspen and scrub oak observed along this traverse indicates that the thick
brownish to reddish brown to gray brown soil is rich in nutrients.
• Overburden depth to the B-Seam ranges from about 1,350 to 1,500 feet. The overburden
thickness at the well site is about 1,450 feet.
• No subsidence cracks or bulges were observed within the area of mining influence of the
eastern, mined-out part of longwall Panel 17.
Location 14:
This is an observation point for a large landslide that occurs west of this point on the west side of
Deep Creek.
• The landslide is about 1,300 feet long in an east-west direction (600 feet of vertical extent)
and as much as 650 fee[ wide (Figure 18).
• The landslide is located above the headgate entries of the mined-out part of longwall Panel 17
(Map 1).
831-032.610 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
