Subsidence Field Observations
West Elk Mine
July 22-24, 2003
4.2.5 Traverse J-J'
Traverse J-J' begins at the fork in drill road (Points F and G) and ends at Drill Hole SOM-54
(Map 1).
• Traveled above the approximate mid points of mined-out longwall Panel 16 and the un-
minedpart of longwall Panel 17.
• The material encountered in the road cut is mostly colluvium and soil, with a few isolated
outcrops of sandstone and siltstone of the Barren Member of the Mesaverde Formation.
• Overburden depth to the B-Seam ranges between 1,450 and 1,600 feet.
• No definitive subsidence cracks or bulges were observed. Conditions appeared similar to last
yeaz, except [hat the road cut looked more weathered.
4.2.6 Traverse K-K'
Traverse K-K' begins at the fork in the drill roads northeast of Point J' and ends at Methane
Drainage Well MDW-17-04.
• Last half of traverse was above the eastern, mined-out part of longwall Panel 17.
• The material exposed in the road cut was primarily soil and colluvium. A thick, rich, reddish
brown to gray brown soil occurs on much of the traverse.
• Overburden depth to the B-Seam ranges from 1,650 to 1,700 feet.
• No subsidence features (cracks or bulges) were observed.
4.2.7 Traverse L-L'
Traverse UL' begins at a fork in drill roads located about 700 feet north of the beginning of
Traverse K-K' and ends at Methane Drainage Well MDW-17-O5.
831-032.610 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
