SHELTON, Director
DATE: May 6, 1987
T0: Steve Renner
FROM: John T. Doerfer ~J~
RE: 1986 ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT, SENECA II-W MINE, FILE N0. C-82-057
I have completed II(y review of the surface water sections of the 1986 Seneca
II-W AHR. The report includes a discussion of data collected from August,
1980 through September, 1986 for all sites on both Sage and Dry Creeks. For
each station, the following information is provided:
-Description of Monitoring Location
-History of Monitoring
-Flow Measurement Method
-Period-of-Record Hydrograph
-Discussion of Streamflow Regime
-Plot of Mean Data on Piper Diaqram
-Mean and Maximum TDS Concentration
-Statistical Summary (mean, min, max, std dev)
-Table of Data Collected in Appendix
-Constituents Exceeding Stream Standards
In general, the report is comprehensive and well organized. I am providing
you with the following comments on the report which you may want to consider
forwarding to the operator.
1. From the discussions presented on exceedence of stream standards for
ammonia, it is uncertain whether total ammonia or un-ionized ammonia is
being used in the analysis. The un-ionized fraction can not be
analyzed for directly and must be calculated based on pH and
temperature. Is this being performed? This is difficult to determine
as only one value for ammonia is reported in the data. If total
ammonia is being compared to the un-ionized standard, then this might
explain the higher-than-expected exceedences of ammonia at the
undisturbed Seneca II-W Mine.
2. The report states that data prior to August, 1980 were not included in
~he data an lysis because they have not been entered into the data
ase. Is tie baseline data collected prior to this period planned to
be eotere into ,the data base and, if not, what justification is
provlfded or omitting this data?
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
