Seneca II Mine. Permanent revegetation included seeding and planting of trees and shrubs.

Permanent seeding was completed on 32.9 acres in the cadge m ining area, as shown on Exhibit
91.4. Se edbed preparation operations consisted of tillage with an of fset disk prior to
permanent seeding. Seed Mix #1 with supplemental species, presented in Table 91.6, was
submitted to the Division for ~reviev on April 1, 5991. Seed Mix #1 was used for all
permanent seeding conducted at the Seneca II Mine in 1991. Seeding was completed with a
modified rangeland type drift seeder equipped with multiple seed boxes and depth bands on
the disk openers.
No mulching activities were conducted during 1991. All permanently revegetated areas were
cover cropped with winter wheat at an approximate drilled rate of 15 pounds per acre.
A total of 19,748 seedlings were planted in 14 concentrated shrub planting areas in 1991
(See Exhibit 91.4 for locations). Table 91.7 lists planting areas and approximate
acreages, species composition of each area, and the total numbers planted by species for
each area. All plant materials were one-year-old stock developed from chokecherry and
serviceberry seed collected from the mine site and from aspen seed collected from regional
native sources. The seedlings were grown and planted by BitterrooT Native Growers, Inc. of
Hamilton, Montana. Plantings were completed in the tall of 1991 in reclaimed sites which
were prepared as unseeded strips or as disked strips to control established herbaceous
vegetation. Oeer-Away repellent was placed on all planted seedlings. Observations of fall
1990 plantings indicate that this repellent is effective in reducing browse damage
following planting.
Sixteen live shrub clumps were transplanted from ex i5ting stands of mountain brush
vegetation which were scheduled for topsoil removal. The stumps were excavated after the
shrubs had dropped leaves using a 992 front end loader and were hauled [o prepared sites in
a portion of a reclaimed haul road just east of the realigned Nadge Pasture fence line
(E17300, 526500). The sites were prepared by excavating a pit in the replaced topsoil.
The shrub clumps were placed in the excavated pit and topsail was pushed over the edges of
the shrub clumps.
Survey or control of noxious weeds was carried out in the areas shown on Exhibit 91.4.
Because of the extensive nature of the 1991 weed control activities and the occurrence of
numerous scattered spot control areas, specific sites which were sprayed are not shown.
12
