`5 i'Iru b
s ~ subsh,-
Shrub Density (Table 6) i ubS
Woody stem density in this area averaged 4,701.6 individuals per acre. Native shrubs
accounted for 7113.9 stems per acre. Big sage rus contributed slightly less than this entire
total. Douglas rabbitbrush, rubber rabbitbrush, and silver sagebrush were minor contributors.
The density of native subshrubs averaged 7587.6 individuals per acre. Fringed sage was the
dominant species in this lifeform. Greene rabbitbrush was also present.
1996 Reclamation
(Photographs 9 through 12)
Cover (Table 7)
Native perennial (orbs contributed 70.4 percent of total vegetation cover. Western yarrow and
blue flax each contributed more than two-fifths of this total. Rocky Mountain penstemon, two-
groove milkvetch, hoary tansyaster, willow dock (Rumex triangulivalvus), and Pacific aster each
contributed approximately 1 percent to this total. Introduced annual and biennial forbs accounted
for 9.7 percent of total vegetation cover. Flixweed tansymustard contributed more than four-fifths
of this total. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) and littlepod falseflax (Camelina microcarpa) each
accounted for less than 2 percent of this total. Introduced perennial forbs comprised 7.1 percent
of total vegetation cover. Burnet was the major contributor. Alfalfa, titer milkvetch, and Canada
thistle were relatively minor contributors. Native perennial grasses accounted for 5.2 percent of
total vegetation cover. Slender wheatgrass and basin wildrye were major contributors. Foxtail
barley, Sandberg bluegrass, thickspike wheatgrass, green needlegrass, and western wheatgrass
were relatively minor contributors. The native subshrub, fringed sage, accounted for 3.4 percent
of total vegetation cover. Greene rabbitbrush was also present. Cheatgrass and cereal rye, both
introduced annual grasses, contributed a total of 2.2 percent of total vegetation cover. Russian
wildrye was a major component of the 1.1 percent of total vegetation cover contributed by
introduced perennial grasses. Smooth brome was a relatively minor contributor. Big sagebrush, a
native shrub, contributed 0.4 percent of total vegetation cover.
Total vegetation cover was observed to be 31.4 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock
' accounted for 1.3, 34.0, 32.4, and 0.9 percent respectively. Species density averaged 18.2
species per 100 sq. m.
Production (Table 8)
' Herbaceous biomass production averaged 938.6 pounds per acre in this reclamation unit. Native
perennial forbs accounted for 65.6 percent (615.6 Ib/acre) of this total. Western yarrow and blue
flax were the dominant species. The remaining production in this lifeform was contributed by six
' other species. Native perennial cool season grasses contributed 10.5 percent (98.1 Ib/acre) of
total production. Foxtail barley was the dominant species. Nine other species made lesser
contributions. Canada thistle, alfalfa, and burnet, all introduced perennial forbs, contributed 7.2
percent (67.8 Ib/acre) of all production. Fringed sage, a native subshrub, contributed 5.1 percent
(48.2 Ib/acre) of all production. Introduced annual grasses, introduced annual and biennial forbs,
and introduced perennial cool season grasses contributed 3.6 (33.9 Ibacre), 3.4 (32.1 Ib/acre),
and 3.2 (30.3 Ib/acre) percent respectively of total production. Native annual and biennial forbs,
~ and native shrubs each accounted for less than one percent of total production.
Shrub Density (Table 9)
Woody stem density average 46.8 stems per acre in this area. Native shrubs contributed
2809.9 stems per acre and big sagebrush was the dominant species. Rubber rabbitbrush,
Douglas rabbitbrush, and winterfat were also present. Native sub-shrubs accounted for 10,336.8
stems per acre. Fringed sage contributed 10,277.3 stems per acre. Greene rabbitbrush was also
present.
]0
