` ~ Additional Sheet
Snyder Quarry Annual Report
May 27, 1995
Base Reclamation
Minimal Mining Activity: As a result of a company policy to shift as much activity to the
Pikeview Quarry as possible only minimal mining was done here during the last year. This
policy is in response to public concern about Pikeview. The company wants to complete
Pikeview as soon as possible and therefore limits mining at Snyder.
Because of this limited amount of mining little reclamation, other than some backfilling
of previously mined areas, was done. No soil was spread or revegetation done.
Spring Bain Damages: Because most of this quarry drains internally and contains an incredible
water holding capacity, damages from heavy spring rains were very slight within the quarry
area. No slumping occurred on any of the revegetation areas. Minor stumpage occurred on
some mining areas, but that simply brought down some loose rock that will be removed
anyway.
Most of the damage occurred on lands outside the quarry itself. This mainly involved
the access road, the sediment control ponds, and the wash water storage pond.
A few trees perched on the edge of the old cut slopes above the road were undercut and
fell on to the road. These were removed. This was not unexpected and has occurred
previously, just not to this extent. The cut slope also experienced a few minor slumps, but
generally the roadway, at least so far, has come through the wet period in good condition.
There was no actual damage to the Wash Water Storage Pond, but runoff from
connecting drainages filled the pond to overflowing. This pond is over 15 feet deep and has a
capacity of nearly a million gallons. It's overflowing is a testimony to the volume of rains
received.
When the pond overtlowed the water flowed down the drainage cutting a small gully in
the revegetated hillside. From there it went to the stormwater sediment ponds beside the road
and below the visual berm. There it filled the first pond with sediment and, as intended,
overflowed into the second pond. However, the volume was so great it also filled the second
pond, washed out the dam and left the standpipe hanging in the gap. In other words, the
overflow of the storage pond largely destroyed the sediment control facility. This will need to
be reconstructed. There is still some sediment control capacity in the first pond, but it is very
limited. Repair will need to be done as soon as possible.
1995 Annual Report Snyder Quarry M-77-210 May 27, 1995
