•
Page 2
Mr. John Ward
March 3, 1981
Materials and buildings remaining at the Tunnel Portal from
tunnel construction were salvaged and removed during late
summer. Approximately 2 acres of the former 10-acre storage
area will continue to be used for storage. The remaininc 8
acres was scarified, and grass seed and fertilizer were
broadcast. This area may be required at some point in the future
to serve as a track welding area.
Continued tailing deposition now affects about 505 acres.
That figure and the other disturbance inside the tailing basin
(bypass canal, roads, pipelines and topsoil removal) is less
than the 575 acres of anticipated and bonded affected lac.d
designated for the tailing in the timetable through for
December, 1981. A technical revision of the permit was granted
in July, 1980, relative to the Tailing Deposition Area.
Approximately 50 additional acres associated with
clearing/construction for road, powerline right-of-way, a.nd
storage yard were required. Acres traded for the 50-acre:
disturbance came from the Topsoil Stockpile/Roads Area ir. Ute
Park. We petitioned for the return of these 50 acres to the
Topsoil Stockpile Area in the amendment dated January 27, 1981.
15,000 cubic yards of topsoil were spread on the lower benches
and slopes of the main tailing dam during August-October, 1980.
Grass seed and fertilizer were concurrently broadcast on the
topsoil.
A landfill was closed in the Powerline/Refuse Area, covered
with topsoil, and revegetated. Follow-up spot seeding/fe:rtiliz-
ing of this area will be done in 1981.
A Notice of Intent to Conduct Prospecting Operation:. with
respect to the location of a dam/reservoir on Lost Creek was
filed/received in August, 1980. Prospecting operations ceased
in October, 1980. Drill roads/sites were seeded and fertilized
according to the Reclamation Plan, and follow-up revegeta.tion
will occur in 1981. This area was also included in the January
27, 1981 amendment application.
Other 1980 activities included:
1. Mine Site. Pilot boring for #5 shaft (ventilation)
began. An addition to the electrical office building
was constructed. An addition to the sewage treatment
plant building was begun and should be finished in the
first quarter of 1981. Construction of a mine «ir
intake heating system at #3 shaft utilizing heat: from
minewater and waste oil recycling/burning was begun in
1980 and should be operational in the first halm of
1981. Contrary to our expectations, subsidence com-
menced on September 11, 1980.
