Loye
Senior Reclamation Specialist
Mined Land Reclamation Division
Department of Natural Resources
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Loye:
Re: Calon Dolomite Quarry
File No. 77-376
This is to notify the Mined Land Reclamation Division of the
temporary cessation of mining activities at the Callon Dolo-
mite Quarry for an indefinite period of time commencing August
1, 1983 and continuing. Since that time, there have been no
employees working at the operation. Also, as of that date, all
operating equipment has been removed from the Quarry so as to
preclude theft and vandalism. Some additional items including
scrap and obsolete equipment are still on site, but will be
removed in the near future.
On December 27, 1983, CF&I Steel Corporation announced the
permanent closure of its blast furnaces, coke plant and oxygen
furnaces, This will preclude the need for metallurgical
dolomite from the Quarry in the foreseeable future for the
Pueblo Plant. Due to this, the property has essentially become
surplus to the needs of the Corporation and CFI is exploring
its options as to its disposition.
At the present time, an appraisal of the property is being
performed by an outside contractor in order to determine the
best alternatives. Some interest has been shown by several
parties in purchasing the property as an operating quarry and
CF&I is pursuing this as the preferred course of action.
However, if a sale on this basis does not appear to be likely
other avenues will be explored,
