November 7, 1997 ~F~,F~\1Fn
Mr. Jim Burnell N(~I ~ ~ 19~~
Environmental Protection Specialist
215oCeatennial1Buildingnerals and Geology plvi~~~PR~~°'~~,r,>+,.n~~a~a~ogY
1313 Sherman Street
--~_,
Denver, CO 80203-22"73
RE: Annual Hydrologic Monitoring Report for 1997 - Canadian
Strip Mine (Permit C-81-026)
Dear Mr. Burnell,
Slurco Corporation, by this letter, hereby submits the monitoring
data for the above referenced report. This data includes a water
level measurement at Well 7. Past data collected in support of the
Phase III analysis is also submitted herein.
The Canadian Strip Mine site is located on Bolton Draw, a tributary
of the Republican River within the North Platte River Basin. The
applicable receiving stream standards are designated in Region 12,
Stream Segment 9, which includes most tributaries of the North
Platte River system. Water monitoring at Canadian Strip in 1996
consisted of a single full suite sampling of water from the two
ponds and the backfilled pit well. Grab samples were acquired from
the ponds and well on October 9, 1996.
Quarterly pond inspections for the site have been submitted
throughout the year. No discharges occurred from either pond,
however, water levels were near the discharge point, the highest
they have been in several years.
Water quality in the ponds is consistent with water quality
observed historically. The calcium bicarbonate waters are slightly
saline with total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations ranging
from 145 mg/1 to 360 mg/1. The waters are alkaline and have
relatively low hardness, less than 186 mg/1. The water quality in
the ponds generally meets acute standards for all metals but silver
as well as all other anionic standards. Detection limits were
inadequate to determine compliance with some chronic metal
standards and ammonia concentrations. Iron concentrations were
elevated in the 1996 sample from Pond 1, but that is probably
attributable to the high total suspended solids ('711 mg/1) or
concentration of elements due to evaporation and the time of year
that the water sample was taken. The pond water quality meets all
CDMG Material Damage standards except the aquatic life standard for
marrnr~
5990 Greenwood Plaza Blvd. • Suite 250 • Englewood, Colorado 80111
Phone (303) 850-0930 Fax (303) 721-9298
Environmental Planners, Scientis[s and Engineers
