ANNUAL RECLAMATION REPORT
MESA GRAVEL PIT
PEABODY COAL COMPANY
PERMIT N0. 82-36
INTRODUCTION
The original Mesa Gravel Pit was permitted in August 1980 under the Limited Impact
Operations Regulations. The permit area originally contained 9.95 acres. The permit
area was expanded by 25.35 acres on June 22, 1982 for a total permit area of 36.3 acres.
The Mesa Gravel Pit operation is not afull-time gravel mining operation. Gravel is
mined on an "as needed" basis for the haulage roads at the Seneca II Coal Mine. The coal
haulage trucks, on their return trip from the power plant, stop at the gravel pit to pick
up gravel (only when needed). N.~hen the operation started in 1980 a major portion of the
old permit area was "opened up" for gravel recovery. This was due to needed room for
the coal trucks to maneuver in the pit. Rather than create more surface disturbance,
this open pit method of mining was aimed at depth recovery rather than width or
length. The pit has recently attained sufficient width and length to begin reclamation
operations. Those operations, as of this reporting, have been the backfilling and grading
aspects of the reclamation process.
Most of the disturbance at the pit happened prior to June 22, 1982. This report conerns
itself mainly with Permit No. 82-36. Please refer to Exhibit 2.14 for location of activi-
t i es.
